bestbuddies

Best Buddies Edinburgh is a student run charity working to enhance the lives of many people with learning disabilities. We hold a weekly social night where students and disabled adults come together to have fun and make friends. We also head out into the city once a month for a group event; bowling, cinema trips, zoo visits. This year we are increasing the size of our catchment and introducing more exciting activities to help integrate these sometimes isolated adults into the community. With your fund-raising we hope to be able to touch the lives of more disabled adults by subsidising events which help them to grow and develop their confidence levels. It would also allows us to push more funding into publicity to raise awareness of our services within the Edinburgh community so that more people can reach out to us. Thank you in advance for your support. And good luck in the run!

The Anti-malarial Outreach Project is a student society at The University of Edinburgh involved in improving the awareness and prevention of major causes of illness in Cameroon. These include malaria, waterborne diseases and HIV/AIDS. We work in partnership with a student charity based in Yaounde, Cameroon and for the past three years we have sent out a group of Edinburgh students to carry out projects in rural villages. Our main strategy is to educate people about these illnesses whilst distributing items such as condoms and insecticde to aid disease prevention. All of our fundraising will go towards our 2013 summer project. Click here for more information

Meningitis Research Foundation’s (MRF) vision is a world free of meningitis and septicaemia.

At least 8 people will contract meningitis or septicaemia every day in the UK. One in ten will die and 25% of those that survive will live with life-altering after-effect such as amputations, brain damage, hearing or sight loss. Timing is critical – meningitis can kill in under 4 hours. Recognising the symptoms and giving immediate treatment with antibiotics, can literally be the difference between life, death, or serious lasting after effects. Through our research, awareness-raising and support work, we prevent deaths and disability from these devastating diseases, improve survival rates and outcomes and support thousands of people whose lives have been affected by them.

Home Link Family Support aims to work with our volunteers to provide practical and emotional support for families with young children. We have been providing this early intervention support since 1986. Our vision is to ensure that all families will have the support they need to bring their children up in a secure and stable environment. We do this by recruiting, training, and supporting volunteers to become Befrienders to children and their families. We provide opportunities for people to become involved in caring for members of their community in South and West Edinburgh and Midlothian. In addition to our befriending service in Midlothian we provide additional support through our group work programme and our innovative Therapeutic Family Work.
